What to Expect

Start with the basics: how to prepare your clay, sit at the wheel, center, and begin shaping simple forms.
You’ll learn:
How to wedge and prepare clay
How to use the pottery wheel safely and comfortably
The basics of centering clay
How hand position, pressure, and speed affect the piece
How to start making simple forms like cups or bowls
The goal of Week 1 is not perfection. It is getting comfortable with the wheel.

This week is all about practice. You’ll spend more time throwing, repeating the basics, and learning how to create more intentional shapes.
You’ll learn:
How to open and pull walls
How to improve height, shape, and consistency
How to make bowls, cups, and simple vessels
How to troubleshoot common beginner issues
How to slow down and let the clay respond
The goal of Week 2 is confidence through repetition.

Once your pieces have dried to the right stage, you’ll learn how to trim and refine them.
You’ll learn:
How to trim the bottom of your pieces
How to clean up edges and refine shapes
How to add simple details or surface decoration
How to understand what makes a piece feel finished
How to prepare your work for firing
The goal of Week 3 is to turn your practice pieces into finished forms.

This week focuses on glazing, finishing choices, and understanding what happens before your pieces go into the kiln.
You’ll learn:
How glazing works
How to choose glaze combinations
How to apply glaze cleanly
How to make pieces food-safe when appropriate
What happens during firing and when to pick up your work
After class, we’ll fire your pieces and let you know when they are ready for pickup.
